Location:

Abstract:
This BOF will provide a forum to discuss issues related to scalability in the development of runtime and operating systems. As high end computing systems continue to increase in size, runtime and operating systems are becoming a critical bottleneck in application scalability. In the past, system developers have considered two general approaches to providing the needed runtime/operating system: lightweight approaches and full-featured approaches. Lightweight approaches do not adversely affect application scalability; however, they frequently impose a significant burden on application development as many of the commonly used services are not provided. In contrast, full-featured approaches tend to provide all of the needed services, but have been shown to adversely impact application scalability.
FAST-OS (Forum to Address Scalable Technology for runtime and Operating Systems) was established to encourage the development of alternate approaches to the development of runtime and operating systems, including the further development of lightweight and full-featured approaches. For more information, see the FAST-OS web page (http://www.cs.unm.edu/~fastos/).
