The Globus Toolkit in e-Science: Examples and Lessons Session: S14: The Globus Toolkit in e-Science: Examples and Lessons Event Type: Tutorial Time: 1:30pm - 5:00pm Speaker(s): Lee Liming Location: 612 Abstract: The Globus Alliance and the NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI) aim to provide solutions to the challenges that limit “e-Science”: the use of distributed computing and collaboration technologies in science. While these Grid software tools have made significant contributions to e-Science (the Globus Toolkit and Condor for example), building an e-Science application is more complicated than simply adopting one of these tools. This half-day tutorial provides three case studies from successful e-Science projects and highlights the lessons learned from those experiences. Three challenging IT problems will be presented in the context of specific science projects. The tutorial will explore the science requirements, the technical approach taken in each solution, and the results. Reusable Grid technologies from the Globus Toolkit such as GridFTP, MyProxy, and GRAM will be introduced. Along the way, we will highlight the general lessons that these experiences provided and the implications for new e-Science projects.
